It’s Humid! 5 Ways to Beat the Heat

A warm humid day can be more dangerous than a very hot dry day. The reason — humidity. It can zap strength and dehydrate you quickly, many times without warning.

The American Red Cross has some suggestions to help you stay cool and safe during the summer months:

    • Drink plenty of water, because your body needs it to keep cool. In hot weather, as much as 3 to 4 quarts per day are recommended when exercising. Your body loses water when it sweats, so don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink anything — stay hydrated.
    • Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them, as they make the heat’s effect on your body worse.
    • Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat.
    • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun’s energy.
    • If you must do strenuous activity outdoors, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4 and 7 a.m.

At Somerby, another great way to stay cool is to take a dip in our indoor pool! We also offer many other indoor activities, like exercising in our state-of-the art fitness center, participating in a Conductorcise® class, or playing the Nintendo Wii™.
